Riccardo Calafiori marked his league debut with the decisive goal, rising to meet Declan Rice’s corner in the second half and handing the Gunners three crucial points.

Speaking after the match, Arteta admitted his team were not at their fluent best but highlighted their ability to grind out a result when needed.

“A big, big result coming into the first game of the season at Old Trafford,” Arteta said. “They’ve made new signings, there’s momentum around them, and to win here gives us confidence. I’m very happy to be part of this team.”

Resilience and mistakes

The Spaniard acknowledged that Arsenal made errors in possession, particularly in attack, but credited his players for reacting quickly and not allowing United to capitalise.

“We had seven or eight situations when the ball was open to play through, and we gave it away,” Arteta explained. “Then it becomes a basketball game, and against a side with their finishing quality, that’s dangerous. But the way every player reacted to those mistakes gave us the chance to win.”

Arteta emphasised that finding ways to win without being at their best is key over the course of a long season.

“Momentum and confidence are vital,” he said. “There are areas we must improve, but resilience is what carries you through 10 months of football.”

Patience with Gyokeres

New signing Viktor Gyokeres made his Premier League debut but failed to get on the scoresheet. Arteta, however, urged patience with the striker, praising aspects of his performance while admitting there is work to do.

“He did a lot of good things, especially in our pressing,” Arteta said. “He took too much time in some areas, and we need to help him improve there. He didn’t get many chances because we didn’t find the final ball often enough. But to come here, play your first game for Arsenal, and win, it’s a good start for him.”

Calafiori’s dream start

The match-winner Calafiori impressed on his league debut, not just with his goal but also his defensive contribution. Arteta said the Italian’s impact came as no surprise.

“He offers qualities that are different,” Arteta noted. “He’s adapting well, and for him to score the decisive goal today is a fantastic moment.”

Arsenal now turn their focus to building on this opening success, with Arteta keen to sharpen the attack while maintaining the fighting spirit that secured a statement win at Old Trafford.
