Alejandro Garnacho has drawn attention following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim as head coach of Manchester United.

The Argentine winger, who left United last summer, was quick to ‘like’ an Instagram post confirming Amorim’s sacking. The post, shared by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, appeared shortly after United announced the decision on Monday morning. The brief interaction did not go unnoticed by supporters, many of whom viewed it as a pointed response given the pair’s difficult history.

United confirmed Amorim’s departure less than 24 hours after Sunday’s 1-1 draw away to rivals Leeds United. The result left the club sixth in the Premier League, continuing a run of inconsistent performances that had increased pressure on the Portuguese coach.

Following the match at Elland Road, Amorim delivered a strongly worded press conference in which he suggested frustration with the club’s hierarchy. He said he joined United to be the “manager” rather than “just the coach” and hinted that he did not expect to remain at Old Trafford beyond his contract, which still had 18 months left to run.

Amorim exits with the lowest win percentage of any permanent Manchester United manager since the Premier League began in 1992, a statistic that underlines the club’s struggles during his 14-month spell.

His relationship with Garnacho had been strained for some time. Tensions became public in December 2024 when Amorim left the winger out of the squad for the Manchester derby. From that point on, their working relationship failed to recover.

The situation reached a conclusion in May, when Garnacho was omitted from United’s squad for the final game of the season against Aston Villa. Shortly afterwards, Amorim informed the player that he was free to leave the club.

Garnacho completed a £40 million move to Chelsea last summer and has since made 20 appearances in all competitions. His start at Stamford Bridge has been mixed, with one Premier League goal from ten starts. Chelsea themselves are currently without a manager following the recent departure of Enzo Maresca.

In confirming Amorim’s exit, Manchester United announced that former midfielder and Under-18s head coach Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis. Fletcher will lead the team for Wednesday’s league trip to Burnley as the club begin the search for a long-term replacement.

For now, United turn their focus to steadying the season, while Garnacho’s understated online reaction adds another small but telling footnote to a turbulent chapter at Old Trafford.
