Leicester City’s rollercoaster journey continues as the recently-relegated Foxes now face potential Championship points deduction in a dramatic new financial fair play twist.

Just when Leicester fans thought things couldn’t get more complicated, the Premier League has slapped the 2016 champions with fresh charges over alleged financial breaches during the 2023-24 campaign – setting up another high-stakes legal showdown.

Back to Square One: Championship Return Could Start with Minus Points

Talk about a welcome-back present! After tumbling out of the Premier League following the unsuccessful tenures of Steve Cooper and Ruud van Nistelrooy, Leicester now face the prospect of starting their Championship promotion push on negative points.

An independent commission will determine whether the Foxes breached the dreaded Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during their previous Championship stint – the very season that saw them bounce straight back to the top flight.

“Leicester’s accountants must be developing migraines at this point,” joked former Premier League chairman Simon Jordan. “This is turning into the financial equivalent of a penalty shootout that never ends.”

If Leicester supporters are experiencing déjà vu, that’s because this isn’t the club’s first tango with Premier League lawyers. Earlier this season, the Foxes actually won a David-versus-Goliath legal battle that prevented the Premier League from charging them for PSR breaches in 2022-23.

In that case, Leicester successfully argued that the Premier League had no jurisdiction to charge them because they were competing in the Championship at the time – a clever bit of legal footwork that left Premier League officials red-faced.

The Premier League, not one to take defeat lying down, promptly changed its rulebook to slam shut that loophole faster than a VAR offside decision. This rule change now allows them to pursue Leicester for alleged breaches in the 2023-24 season – when the club was still in the Championship.

More Than Just Financial Fair Play

Adding fuel to the financial fire, Leicester also stand accused of failing to submit their annual accounts to the Premier League by the December 31, 2024 deadline. The cherry on top? They allegedly didn’t provide “full, complete and prompt assistance” to the Premier League’s enquiries.

“When it rains, it pours,” noted football finance expert Kieran Maguire. “Leicester are fighting battles on multiple fronts now, and the outcome could significantly impact their promotion hopes this season.”

Leicester’s Response: Tight-Lipped but Cooperative

The Foxes have responded to the charges with a carefully worded statement that suggests they’re willing to play ball – up to a point:

“Consistent with its previous commitments, the club intends to engage cooperatively in this matter now that the Premier League’s jurisdiction has been established for the period ending FY24. However, we will not be able to comment further on these proceedings until they are concluded, due to their confidential nature.”

Reading between the lines: we’ll cooperate, but don’t expect us to roll over.

What’s Next for the Former Champions?

For Leicester supporters, this latest twist feels like yet another hurdle in what’s becoming an increasingly complicated journey since their fairy-tale Premier League triumph in 2016.

The independent commission’s decision could dramatically reshape Leicester’s Championship campaign before it even begins in earnest. A points deduction would make the road back to the Premier League significantly steeper for a club still adjusting to life outside the elite.

One thing’s certain – the lawyers are the only guaranteed winners in this ongoing saga. For Leicester City, the battle continues both on and off the pitch.
