Ethan Nwaneri could not have asked for a better start to life in France after scoring on his debut for Marseille just one day after completing a loan move from Arsenal.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Ligue 1 side on a short-term deal until the end of the season and was immediately named in the starting line-up for Saturday’s league clash against Lens. He marked the occasion with a composed first-half goal as Marseille claimed a 3–1 home win.
Nwaneri’s move came after limited playing time at Arsenal this season, despite his strong breakthrough campaign last year. The England Under-21 international featured regularly during the 2024–25 season, scoring nine goals across all competitions, but found opportunities harder to come by under Mikel Arteta in recent months.
Marseille moved quickly to secure his services, offering the youngster the chance for regular football in one of Europe’s top leagues. Arsenal confirmed the deal on Friday, describing Nwaneri as a highly talented player and wishing him well for his development in France.
Before completing the switch, Nwaneri spoke positively about the move, revealing that former Marseille defender William Saliba helped influence his decision. The teenager also expressed his excitement about working under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
That trust was repaid straight away. Nwaneri started against second-placed Lens and showed confidence throughout the match. He found the net in the first half, scoring between two goals from Amine Gouiri as Marseille responded well after their recent European defeat. Lens pulled one goal back late on through Rayan Fofana, but the result was never in doubt.
Speaking after the match, De Zerbi made it clear that reputation and age do not determine selection in his squad. He stressed that players who are ready will be given opportunities immediately and praised Nwaneri’s quality, describing his debut goal as a fine finish.
The victory moves Marseille closer to the teams above them in the league table as they continue their push near the top of Ligue 1. Nwaneri will not be eligible for Marseille’s upcoming Champions League fixture due to registration rules, but he is expected to feature again domestically when they return to league action next weekend.
For the young midfielder, it was a confident first step in a new chapter, and a reminder of his ability to make an impact when given the chance.
