Nottingham Forest’s push for a Champions League spot has taken a devastating blow after striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency surgery following a frightening collision with the goalpost during Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Leicester City.

The Nigerian forward crashed into the upright at high speed late in the match at the City Ground, sending shivers through the crowd. Despite bravely trying to continue, medical staff later discovered the severity of his abdominal injury, rushing him to hospital on Monday night.
The incident sparked a touchline drama when Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed onto the pitch after the final whistle, visibly fuming at manager Nuno Espírito Santo for not substituting the clearly struggling Awoniyi as the team chased a winner.
Adding to Forest’s frustration, the collision happened during a controversial phase of play when Leicester’s Facundo Buonanotte also hit the post following an Anthony Elanga attack that should have been flagged offside much earlier.
Despite the setback, there’s still plenty for Forest fans to celebrate. The club has already secured European football for the first time since the mid-90s with a Conference League spot guaranteed. However, their dreams of reaching Europe’s top table now hang in the balance, with their final two matches against Chelsea potentially not enough without slip-ups from Villa, City or Newcastle.
The good news? Awoniyi’s condition, while serious enough for urgent surgery, is reportedly not life-threatening. Everyone at the City Ground will be wishing their striker a speedy recovery as they prepare for a nail-biting end to what has already been a remarkable season.
